Food and perishable goods

You most likely don’t want to your storage unitings – which is not something you want to deal with in your storage unit.

There was a story where a woman lost her hamster but it turned out it was in a storage box. The hamster ended up in a storage unit. It is a good idea to avoid putting any kind of living creatures in your storage unit.

This includes fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Don’t ever think of putting any animal inside the storage unit.

It is important to keep in mind that you are not allowed to turn a storage unit into your permanent residence. While the storage units are open and accessible 24/7, this is not a place to live so you don’t have to pay rent.

You shouldn’t use your storage unit to work from or run your business. It is not allowed to sell anything from your unit where customers come there to pick the goods. If you want a place where you can work, consider looking at managed offices and meeting rooms. If you looking for a high-quality storage company then see Blue Box Storage.

Flammable or combustible materials

This might seem like an obvious thing, but you need to remember never to store paint, gas, oil, petrol, or cleaning solvent in the storage unit. These items are not allowed because they are a risk to the whole storage facility because they are flammable.

If you aren’t sure if an item can be stored in the unit – just ask yourself whether it is flammable. If the answer to the question is yes, then you need to look for another place to store it.

Explosives, firearms, weapons, or ammunition

The Firearms Rules 1998 states that these items have to be stored in a secure location where unauthorized people cannot access them (these are people who don’t have firearms certificates). These items have to be stored in a secure gun container or cabinet.

The storage facility is accessed by many different customers and you don’t legally own the facility, the assessment of the security of the unit is not going to be appropriate for explosive devices and firearms.

Radioactive materials, chemicals, or biological agents

There are some designated sites that are allowed to store radioactive materials, but there are not many of them. Hazardous materials and other chemicals are dangerous and it is hard to store them because they can pose a risk to the storage facility.

Some of the items in this category are asbestos, toxic waste, kerosene, propane tanks, acids, and the combustible or flammable items mentioned above.

Illegal items

If you’re not the legal owner of an item, you shouldn’t store it in a storage unit or even have it in your possession.
This also includes illegal goods or items – which includes counterfeit items, smuggled items such as tobacco, unlicensed medicines, illicit alcohol, and unsafe goods.

Money and securities

If you want to store such items, then you need to get specialist storage, like a safe deposit box. You can keep these in a designated location or at home.

While the storage units are safe and secure, you need to store the items in a place with a high level of security. You will have peace of mind knowing your belongings are safe.
