1. Regularly brush your teeth.
The vast majority of people know that they should brush their teeth twice every day in order to get rid of bacteria and plaque. However, you should avoid brushing your teeth too aggressively and use the correct technique so that your teeth are thoroughly cleaned.
The best way to brush your teeth is in a small circular motion as opposed to a back and forth like a saw. Always make sure that you brush the back, top and front of each tooth. Overall, it should take you about 2 to 3 minutes in order to finish thoroughly brushing your teeth.
If you use a toothbrush that is too hard, this can actually cause your enamel and gums to get damaged. This will then cause you to suffer from tooth sensitivity and it will also damage your enamel and even cause gum erosion.
So, always use a soft-bristle toothbrush to brush your teeth according to the American Dental Association. Also, make sure and get a new toothbrush every 3 months or even before the bristles become very frayed.
2. Use dental hygiene products with fluoride.
Fluoride is derived from fluorine which is found in soil. According to experts, fluoride is important in dental care because it is believed to prevent cavities from forming. Fortunately, it is a typical ingredient that is used in mouthwash and toothpaste.
With that said, there are lots of dental products that don’ have fluoride in them which means that many people don’t use them.
According to studies, when you don’t use fluoride, this can lead to tooth decay. Even if you take good care of your teeth by brushing regularly and flossing, you still have a high chance of getting cavities if you don’t use toothpaste or mouthwash that contain fluoride.
There are lots of places in the U.S. that also add fluoride into their water. This is a highly recommended practice by trusted organizations such as the American Dental Association, Centres for Disease Control And Prevention and the World Health Organization.
In order to find out if the water you receive in your taps contains fluoride, all you need to do is call your local government. Do note that reverse osmosis water filters will actually take out the fluoride from the water which means that if you use well water, it is important to find out the fluoride level of it. Also, the vast majority of bottled water doesn’t have fluoride in them. If you are in the Fleet area then see ‘The Dental Practice in Fleet.
3. Floss at least once per day.
Flossing is very important since it helps to get rid of bacteria, plaque and even food from between your teeth that is not removed by your toothbrush. Since it helps get rid of these, it can ensure you don’t suffer from bad breath.
Despite the fact that there aren’t long term studies that show the benefits of flossing, it is still highly recommended by the American Dental Association. It is also recommended by the CDC.
When flossing, avoid simply moving the floss up and down since this won’t get rid of the plaque and debris properly. Instead, push the floss downwards and then curve it so that it hugs each tooth and pull upwards.
4. Go to the dentist on a regular basis.
It is best to visit your dentist at least once every 6 months to get a thorough dental checkup. At this check-up, a trained dental hygienist will clean your teeth as well as get rid of tartar and plaque.
Additionally, your dentist will check for mouth cancer, gum disease, cavities as well as other issues. In some cases, they may do an x-ray.
Children and young adults should definitely see a dentist once every 6 months so that they can avoid getting cavities. Adults who have great dental hygiene don’t necessarily have to go every 6 months due to their lower oral health risk.
